Where the Rubber Meets the Road

If you stopped by because you were expecting to discuss the merits of various tire products, and their performance on different road surfaces…well you are in for some major disappointment. No, this article is all about how consistency will get you more traffic for your blog. Oops…again this isn’t about those “blog for money” things either. No this is a social experiment, and the traffic I am talking about is the people who are viewing your blog for the sake of the blog itself, and not for the sake of getting you to buy something. Whew, I feel a lot better about getting that out-of-the-way.
Now I was curious. Would blogging on a more regular basis make any difference to how much exposure my blog was getting? I realize that having something worth reading has an impact on this, but for the sake of this analysis, I am just looking at the real numbers. Whether there is talent in my writing, I leave that for those that read my stuff.
For the purpose of this analysis, I opted to take a look at the time frame in my blog between April, 2010 and January, 2011. I selected this date range because it shows some very telling things, which I will briefly discuss. First if you look at anytime before June, you will notice that I am not getting very much traffic at all. I started Mike’s Take in July of 2009, but really didn’t do much with it until about a year later in June. I got some minor traffic, but it was almost non-existent.
Now in June, I was honored to receive “freshly pressed” honors for an article I wrote during the world cup soccer championships. It got some pretty good traffic coming in, and that continued for about two to three days. As you can see above, this inspired me to keep writing and adding content to my blog. Over the next three months I would send about 40 posts or so (roughly 2 or 3 posts a week). Then something happened. I stopped submitting things to my blog on a very consistent basis. In fact, for the remaining three months of 2010, I probably only submitted about 12 posts or so. I netted 52 posts, but only posted anything starting in June of last year, and so that only averages one post every two weeks over the course of a whole year.
So we hit December of this year, and the kind folks over at wordpress.com threw out this challenge to urge you to blog more. They offered it in two flavors. You could join the postaday or postaweek challenges. Since I had written 52 posts in the prior year, I decided to amp up my game and go for the post a day challenge. January has graced me with the second time an article of mine was “freshly pressed” and my traffic soared. No really it was record-breaking for me. I had twice the visits of my last experience with “fame” on WordPress. Much like the first time, the heavy traffic kept coming in for about two days. However, unlike the first time, I kept submitting posts every day. The results so far are impressive to say the least. I have increased the daily visitation to my blog by almost 4 times. That’s impressive no matter how you slice it.
Now before you go making the assumption that the exposure on wordpress.com was what drove traffic to my site (it certainly didn’t hurt) consider this. In a comparison of the last week of the year before the challenge, and the first week of the new year (and before the second exposure on wordpress.com) my traffic had already doubled. So my point here is if you are posting regularly, you will see your readership increase.
