I Need Your Help
January 28, 2011 5 Comments
I have been writing diligently for the last month. As of this post, I have written 40 different articles in this blog for the month of January. That is pretty incredible, since for the entire year in 2010 I wrote 52 posts. I am finding it easier and easier to write. Each day my mind fills up with thoughts about what I could write about. This is becoming an issue for me. I have so many things I write about that I seem to be lacking focus.
Today, I read a great blog post by Molly Campbell titled Things I Wish I Knew When I Started Writing. Within this article there were several great tips, and the very first one on the list was one I have seen hundreds of times across the web. It says that if you are going to blog, and generate a loyal following of readers, you must decide what your blog is about. You have to decide who you want your audience to be, and to write for them. She goes on with this tip by stating very simply “You cannot be all things to all people”. With all of this in mind you should seek to be consistent..
After reading this I took a step back. I set up this blog as a great writing experiment. I wanted to discover whether I had the chops to write, and whether anyone would like what I had to write. Judging from all of the gracious responses, and the words of encouragement I have received, it would seem that many people like my style, and what I have written about.
Here is where the quandary begins. I write about A LOT of different subjects. Just look at my header above and you will see a plethora of subjects I have submitted things on. You know what I don’t see up there? I don’t see a unified focus (do you?). I don’t see a purpose to my blog. Don’t get me wrong. I have a very diverse liking of all things, and I am always at the ready to offer my view on any number of subjects. I just don’t want to be a jumble of words on an electronic page. I want to find purpose, and a focus.
So, here’s where you come in. I would like some help in pinning down that “focus”. You guys come here to read my work. You have found something you like here. What I want some help with is, determining what my focus appears to be. I am like a horse with the blinders on and need your help in driving me in the right direction.
What were your favorite posts of mine? Where are my strengths? Areas I could improve on? I am laying myself open here because I want to really develop my craft. I have a deep passion for writing, and I want to make myself better. You can help me get better by giving me your unabashed critique of my blog. Put it all out there. Don’t worry, I’m not so high on myself to assume there is not something I can do to improve or tweak to make myself a better writer.
I am looking forward to getting that feedback.
