Unimaginable Beauty

With all the trauma that has happened in Japan recently, I thought I would share something that I found this morning.  It is incredibly tranquil and arguably one of the most satisfying four minutes I have spent today.

This aquarium is located in Okinawa, Japan.  I have been so captivated by the footage that was shot here, that I have watched this several times.  The scale of the creatures in this video made my ten-year old stand with her jaw wide open.  I have to admit that I don’t blame her.

It is important to remember that while the tragedy in Japan is significant, and the effects will be lasting, cities will be rebuilt, and the people that have been lost will be remembered, and that life will move on.  It always does.  Life always finds a way to keep moving.

Water Everywhere at Henry Doorly Zoo

I was recently on vacation with my family here in Nebraska.  We were graced with some pretty terrific weather for that trip.  I was sifting through my photos and noticed that I had a recurring theme on our day at the zoo.  That theme was water.  Pools of it.  Waterfalls shooting their cargo down.  I thought I would share some photos of the experience with you and see what you thought of them.

Around here, it is a pretty common misconception that you will find little or no life in the desert, let alone water.  Shoot, when you talk about deserts here, the only life many people think of are scorpions, and snakes.  The Henry Doorly zoo in Omaha Nebraska has sought to change that impression by creating the world’s largest geodesic dome.  Within that dome you will find three different desert environments.  Within all three of them there is variety of  life, and an abundance of water.

While the types of life, and the availability of water and the ways creatures of all kinds obtained it was different, one thing was the same throughout the deserts.  Water was everywhere if you knew where to find it.

Underneath this gigantic dome is another exhibit called “Kingdoms of the Night”.  Within this place is the largest indoor swamp ever created.  The day/night lighting cycle has been reversed in this place to allow visitors to experience nocturnal creatures and habitats in their normal state of activity.  The sites, sounds, and smells are all authentic, and most everyone’s pulse will speed up just a little as they catch eyes watching them as they pass by.  Alligators are bountiful here, as are other creatures that make their existence in the night time environment.

To the right you can see part of a large family of beaver huddled together on a piece of dry land in this eerie place.  This exhibit gives patrons the chance to view things in a way far safer than you could out in the wild.

Moving out of the darkness and exiting the giant dome, we made our way to another area of the zoo that features water prominently.  The Scott Aquarium is the largest aquarium in a zoo in the world.  Like most of their exhibits, the zoo manages to help you experience everything from the waters of the poles, to the Amazon.

Of course water doesn’t just have to be life-sustaining.  Water can be breath-taking, and beautiful in its own right.  Nothing shows water’s beauty off quite like a waterfall, and there were some great examples at the zoo.  I snapped a couple of shots, the first in the desert, and another in the Lied Jungle that really show the beauty of water.

Of course the zoo offers so much more than water.  It is one of the best places to go in the state of Nebraska, and my family really enjoyed their visit.  Maybe my pictures sparked some interest in visiting one of the best zoos in the Midwest.  If you do go, I would love to see some pictures.

Murder in the Lemons Household

The Victims: Two common gold-fish.  One was, well gold (they are gold fish after all).  The other one was white and gold.  Hmm, I wonder, if they don’t have any gold, how can they still be called gold-fish?  Their names were Sun, and Apple.

The Scene: It was a fishbowl of course.

The Murder Weapon: A tank heater on overdrive.

Prime Suspect: Mom

Did you read that last line?  That’s right Dad, yours truly, is completely innocent of doing any harm to these two gentle, loving creatures.  Okay, okay, I know, they are gold-fish.  Heck the main extent of their love is their frenzied charge at the glass when they see your hand, assuming you are getting ready to feed them.  They have a memory of minutes, and lets face it, gold fish are filthy creatures.  They were, however the first pets of my four and five-year old children.

So what did happen?  Well we have to go back a few days when we managed to kill another fish.  In that instance, it was an algae eater that we were trying to introduce into the tank.  Evidently that fish “froze” to death because the tank was too cold for them.  A visit to the pet store revealed this fact to us so we purchased a shiny new tank heater to correct the situation.  My wife installed the heater and diligently monitored the temperature to make sure everything was going properly.  Everything seemed okay when we retired for the evening.

The next morning would tell a different story.  My wife would find the two fish stuck to the intake tube of the filter mechanism.  There were no tears, and no one was upset.  In fact my little ones were excited to get to “flush” the dead fish down the toilet bowl.  It was a race to see who would get the privilege of doing the actual flushing.

It looks like we will be making another trip to the pet store soon.  I’m starting to think we should have given my children “pet rocks” for their first pet, and see if those survived before moving on to something more fragile.
